Knowing what a treatment session includes will help you get comfortable ahead of your visit.

If you’re considering acupuncture but aren’t sure what to expect, you’re not alone. Trying something new can feel a little intimidating — especially when it involves needles. But rest assured, acupuncture is a gentle, relaxing, and deeply healing practice. At Stephanie Demole Acupuncture, our goal is to make sure you feel completely comfortable and supported from the moment you walk through the door.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to what your first session will be like.
Your First Visit: A Conversation, Not Just a Treatment
Your first acupuncture session is 90 minutes long, and much of that time is spent getting to know you. Unlike conventional medicine, where appointments can feel rushed, acupuncture takes a holistic approach. Stephanie will sit down with you to learn about:
• Your main reason for seeking treatment (pain, stress, sleep issues, digestive concerns, fertility, etc.).
• Your overall health history, including any symptoms, lifestyle habits, and emotional well-being.
• Your goals for treatment, so we can create a plan that’s tailored just for you.
This intake process is thorough but relaxed—it’s more of a conversation than a questionnaire. You can share as much as you feel comfortable with, and there’s absolutely no judgment.
Your Personalized Treatment Plan
After the intake, Stephanie will explain her approach and what acupuncture points she’ll use for your treatment. Every plan is personalized, so even if you and a friend both come in for stress relief, your treatments might look different based on your unique needs.
She’ll also walk you through what to expect during the session, answering any questions you might have.
The Acupuncture Treatment: Deep Relaxation
Now comes the part most people are surprised by—just how relaxing acupuncture is! Here’s what happens:
Gentle Needle Placement: A Moment of Connection
The space is for treatment is warm and inviting, designed to help you unwind the moment you walk in. Stephanie will give you time to get comfortable, whether that means adjusting a pillow, covering up with a light blanket, or simply taking a deep breath to settle in.
Once you’re fully at ease, Stephanie will begin placing the acupuncture needles. These needles are extremely thin—much finer than the ones used for injections—and most people barely feel them.
Stephanie works with care and precision, letting you know where each needle will go. You might feel a tiny pinch, a slight tingle, or even a gentle warmth spreading from the point—these are all signs that energy is shifting and your body is responding. If you feel anything uncomfortable, she’ll adjust immediately to ensure you’re at ease.
Entering a State of Deep Relaxation
Once all the needles are placed, you’ll be left to rest quietly for a period of time.
• A deep sense of calm sets in – Your nervous system shifts from “fight or flight” mode into full relaxation. Many people describe this as a wave of peacefulness washing over them.
• Your body begins to heal – Blood flow increases, endorphins (your body’s natural pain relievers) are released, and stress levels drop.
• You may feel warmth, tingling, or gentle waves of energy – These sensations are completely normal and show that your body is responding to the treatment.
• Some people fall asleep – The experience is so restful that it’s common to drift into a light nap - that's ok!
The room remains quiet and peaceful and this time is completely yours—to rest, reset, and allow your body to do what it does best: heal.
Closing the Session: Feeling Grounded and Renewed
After your resting period, Stephanie will return to carefully remove the needles. This part is quick and painless—most people don’t even notice when the needles are removed.
You’ll have a moment to check in about how you’re feeling, and Stephanie may offer some insights or simple self-care tips to extend the benefits of your treatment. You might notice a deep sense of calm, a refreshed mental state, or even subtle changes in your body’s tension or discomfort levels.
Most patients leave feeling lighter, more centered, and incredibly relaxed—like they’ve just had a long, restorative nap.
After Your Session: What to Expect
Since acupuncture helps regulate your nervous system, it’s common to feel relaxed, light, or even a little sleepy afterward. Some people feel an energy boost instead—it all depends on how your body responds.
Stephanie may suggest some gentle self-care tips to enhance the benefits of your treatment, such as staying hydrated, getting good rest, or taking a warm bath.
